Read on to find out more about our metal types.

White gold is a popular metal choice when it comes to wedding rings. Naturally white gold is an off white greyish/yellowish colour. White gold is combined with other metals such as silver and palladium to make it appear more white, the more alloys the lower the carat.

White gold is coated with rhodium which gives the ring its bright white sparkly finish, The rhodium finish will wear over time so you’ll need to have your ring re-rhodium plated to keep that sparkly finish. It is difficult to say how often this will need doing as it depends on the wear of the ring. Our team can advice whether a re-rhodium is required.

White gold will scratch like yellow gold so you’ll want to have your rings regularly cleaned and polished to keep them looking shiny. Please do be aware that polishing a white gold ring will mean a re-rhodium is required.

Available in 9ct & 18ct.

Yellow Gold is a popular choice when it comes to wedding rings. In fact, it has become more and more popular again over the last few years. Yellow gold is a more traditional metal type. You may notice your parents and grandparents wearing a yellow gold matching plain band.

Gold is combined with other metals, or alloys to make it stronger and hard-wearing. The more alloys, the lower the carat. The exact yellow hue depends on the type of metal alloys that have been used.

Yellow gold is one of the easiest metals to manipulate so makes a great choice for wedding rings that may need to be sized later down the line. It will scratch with everyday wear so it is important to have your jewellery cleaned and polished regularly to keep it looking shiny.

Available in 9ct & 18ct as well as 22ct in some cases.

Considered to be the romantic metal due to it’s pinky/red colour.

Rose Gold is alloyed with copper which gives it the beautiful rose colour. It also makes the gold tougher than yellow and white.

The more copper alloys, the more red the gold becomes.

This beautiful gold is growing in popularity when it comes to wedding rings.

Available in 9ct and 18ct.

Platinum is the most popular choice when it comes to wedding rings.

It has an aesthetically pleasing naturally bright white colour, hard wearing and resistant to tarnishing.

Perfect for everyday wear and is the best choice when it comes to choosing a diamond set band.

Hypoallergenic and non-reactive so great for sensitive skin.

Although durable, platinum will scratch with wear, but these imperfections are easily polished out and maintained.

Similar appearance to platinum and is from the same family.

Two options; palladium 500 and palladium 950. Palladium 500 contains 50% palladium and 50% other alloys white palladium 950 contains 95% palladium and 5% other alloys.

Palladium 500 is greyer in colour while palladium 950 is whiter.

We would always recommend Palladium 950 over 500 as the higher purity is better quality and has more assisted benefits such as being more hypo-allergenic than 500. Palladium 950 is also more readily available at Allum & Sidaway.

Palladium does not tarnish, is hard wearing, light weight and hypo-allergenic.

Like with other metals, palladium will scratch.

You can also consider a mixed metal wedding ring.

The choices really are endless. Our wedding ring collection gives you full control to choose your metal and if you are looking for a mixed metal ring you can decide which parts of the ring are what metal.

This style is particularly amongst gents.

Grey in colour.

One of the hardest metals you can buy which makes it great for someone with a physically demanding job.

Lightweight and hypo-allergenic.

It cannot be resized due to how the ring is cast in production.

This metal type is a very popular metal choice for gents for wedding rings.

Titanium rings are made to order and can be ready in a couple of weeks.

Like with other metals, Titanium rings are available in a variety of styles, widths, patterns and finishes.

Please be aware that we only hold a small amount of Titanium rings in each of our stores. We have a wide variety available to order. Speak to one of our team to find out more about Titanium rings.

Zirconium is an extremely strong metal type.

In it’s original form is grey-white in colour but is also available in black which again is a popular wedding ring choice.

The black look is created using heat treatment.

Like titanium, zirconium cannot be resized.

Please note that we only hold a small selection of Zirconium rings in each of our stores, however we have a wide selection available to order in should Zirconium be the metal for you.

Please do be aware it is recommended for a wedding ring sitting next to an engagement/eternity ring, that the same metal is used to reduce the wearing of the other metal types.
